Clonoghil Castle

Clonoghil Castle is located on the outskirts of Birr Town and is an important site to the history of the town, as it represents one of only three extant medieval monuments.

The Project

Clonoghil is potentially multi-period containing a probable hall-house, surrounded by an earthen ‘bawn’ which is of uncertain date. Whilst Clonoghil is predominantly medieval, the site continued to be an important monument in the post-medieval period, including when it was used as a home by renowned glass makers the Bigo Family from 1623 AD. Since 2023 the Irish Heritage School have undertaken research at the site including photogrammetry and field-survey and geophysics, culminating in an excavation in the summer of 2024 when two archaeological cuttings were excavated at the site, within the castle and across the ditch and bank.
