St Brendan’s Monastery

In the heart of Birr Town a monastery was reputedly founded in the sixth century by St Brendan the Elder, probably at the site of the extant thirteenth to fourteenth century medieval church located between Church Lane and Castle Street.

The Project

This monastery has been the location of several significant church synods, most notably in 697 AD, when the famed Cáin Adomnáin, a Brehon (early Irish) law protecting innocents in battle, was passed. A successor to St Brendan, Macregol, also scribed his gospel book at the site in the ninth century. The Irish Heritage School have supported community based research at the site since 2017, which has included LiDAR laser scanning, geophysical survey, photogrammetry, graveyard recording and an elongated educational program, including site tours, vlogging, children’s workshops etc. Partly arising from all this work we successfully assisted the Birr 20|20 Group in securing state funding to begin conservation works at site in 2024.
